I recently watched a program called the Medicated Child. It was a documentary which showed how children in America are being “diagnosed” with various types of mental disorders as young as a few years old. These children are prescribed one psychiatric medication after another. By the time they are teens many other problems have developed. They become severely dysfunctional. They have not been allowed to grow and develop as nature intended. Watching this program I was reminded of my childhood. I was reminded of a section of the book A Man Among the Helpers where I spoke about how I was as a child:
I was a wild child, playing, running and usually doing everything and anything I wanted. If I felt like jumping out of a tree, I did. If I had an impulse to play on a road, then that’s where I would be. I think I drove my mom crazy trying to keep up with me. I remember getting punished often, but getting away with much, much more.
What I don’t talk about in the book is this – I was beyond wild. I was driving my mother crazy trying to keep up with me. My parents went so far as to take me to the doctors. There I was “diagnosed” with a hyperactive disorder and the doctor recommended that I get placed on a new and experimental medication called Ritalin!
Luckily for me, my parents refused. They knew there had to be something causing this hyperactivity. Somehow they recognized the food they were feeding me was at least part of my hyperactivity. That day they went home and removed all the processed sugars, sweets, and inorganic food from our home. They began to feed me and my siblings only healthy – natural foods. Overnight I went from a hyperactive child with destructive tendencies to calm, “normal” kid. This occurred over 30 years ago.
Now we have a much more dangerous trend taking place. Children by the thousands are being sedated into a state of compliance and lethargy. They are not being allowed to become the vital and powerful adults the world needs so desperately. These children are our hope – and our hope is not being allowed to grow!
Back in 1992 the Medicine Man I was working with came to me and said that every time we pray from now until the day we die we have to include a prayer for the “born and unborn” children. We have to pray that they come into this world with Understanding and Knowledge.
For 20 years we’ve been praying for this every day! Our prayers have been heard and answered. These are the children that are coming into the world with such energy and sensitivity. They are born with energy, vitality, and power. They are here to do the amazing work that needs to be accomplished in a very short time. But before they have a chance to grow up, they are fed toxic food full of preservatives, refined sugars and chemicals known to cause behavior changes. Then when they act “manic” they are diagnosed with ADD or bi-polar disorder and medicated into oblivion. This insanity has to stop….. These children hold the key to our future.
For those with of you with active children, which I know can be trying, take heart – your child is the answer to your wish for a better future. Make sure they eat healthy, make sure they spend time in nature, make sure they are active and make sure they are allowed to fulfill their sacred destiny.
It’s really sad how many people out there don’t know what the typical american diet, prescriptions, and child rearing practises can do to the human body! I wish more people would seek out the truth and change everything for the better! I can only pray for the people who need to change these things to hurry up and change!
Glad to see your blogging. Can’t wait to read the book. Nice work.
This was never the “short hard road” for us to follow. I urge every parent never allow society’s pressures to change what you know to be the truth in your heart concerning the welfare and well being of your children.
If only my parents hadnt fallen into this trap. I fought back in my teens, and refused to remain medicated. I truly wish someone was there to explain what was happening to me and why. I think the only thing that carried me through my teen years was accidental. I fell in with the hippie crowd and became a vegetarian to impress a girl… I STILL thank her for that. (although I am most definately a meat eater today)
