Balance is a word that is thrown around a lot when speaking of spirituality and people’s relationship to the Earth. I think it’s important to take a good look at what balance means and how we affect our both our internal and external balance. We will start with our internal balance.
Human beings have four major parts of “self” in physical existence. The four parts are the heart, mind, body and spirit. These parts have many qualities and sub-parts, but it’s easiest to talk about as four. These four parts of being reveal themselves in the four different ways of perceiving life; emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.
Their spirit is the first part. This is the component of a human that is present before physical birth and continues on after physical death. This part is connected directly to the divine and immortal. The spirit has its own way of understanding creation, and its own way of communicating. It communicates often through symbolic means, such as dreams and visions.
Another place of consciousness is in the heart. There are chemical and neurological functions occurring with in a beating heart that are a form of thought. This thought process is perceived as emotions. Emotions are the messages of the heart and are a very raw and potent form of communication and expression.
The physical body itself also holds certain information. It can also send and receive communication. The body communicates through sending signals as simple as the sensation of physical pleasure or pain, or as subtle and complex as a “gut” instinct or the “hair on the back of your neck standing up”.
The mind and its ability to comprehend certain experiences are very familiar to us in the modern world. Our mind has many gifts and amazing ability to process incredible amounts of information. It does this very effectively by categorizing and quantifying information at high speeds.
These 4 parts of our existences as human beings are equally important. These are our powerful birthright gifts. Each part must be fully understood and used for a person to live in “balance”. Each part has both its strengths and its weaknesses. If one part is neglected then eventually the person will become unbalanced and dis-ease will follow, and then sickness.
A common assumption that people in our modern society have is that spirituality and ceremony is a cure for all types of unhealthy patterns. Spiritual understanding has its place, but only in conjunction with the other three contexts for understanding life (mental, emotional and physical). Spirituality is not the only aspect of a human being; therefore it is not the only part that can be weak or sick. This is something that is often deeply misunderstood by people that have not been raised with this complete understanding.
The lack of understanding of these 4 fundamental parts of the human beings is very apparent in this day and age. Our modern life and educational systems teach children how to only use their mind and body …..and very poorly at that. Teachings of emotional intelligence are completely absent and spiritual communication is typically shunned.
What we are left with then are children and adults that don’t know how to fully think, don’t know how to correctly move, and are emotionally immature and spiritually stunted. If you don’t understand what I’m talking about, walk into your local fast food restaurant or shopping “Super Center” and take a good look around. Do you see many healthy people?
Understand that I’m NOT writing these words as a judgment against anyone. I’m writing this because I recognize the reasons why we have such dysfunction and sickness in the world and I’m passing this knowledge to you. I believe that these types of issues have to be consciously understood before true healing can begin. We must regain balance!
With this knowledge we can begin to understand both the dis-ease and the cure. This understanding can help us make healthy and positive changes within ourselves, with our actions, and with our interactions. This is how we change the world.
